McKinsey puts data center electricity demand growth at about 24% a year to 2030

McKinsey's Global Energy Perspective 2026 projects data center electricity demand rising about 24% a year through 2030, and every one of its most likely scenarios has power supply falling short of IT compute demand across that period. The forecast is rebuilt monthly from CPU and GPU purchase commitments and hyperscaler capex, set against how quickly power infrastructure can be delivered. More than 60% of operators now pair on site generation with grid access. Competition for pipeline capacity is named as a risk to gas fired generation, often treated as the fastest route to firm power. Beyond 2030 the outlook is called less certain, and developers are advised to tie capex to market indicators.

Nvidia gives its liquid cooled Vera Rubin rack and tray designs to the Open Compute Project

Nvidia has contributed its Vera Rubin designs to the OCP: cable free, fan free liquid cooled compute trays, rack scale interconnect and a liquid cooled 5,000 A busbar. The designs sit under MGX 1.2, which supports racks up to 250 kW. Tray connectors let cold plates be swapped without spillage. A separate spec covers the Vera CPU rack, now shipping. Nvidia says the bottleneck is how fast builds can be manufactured and deployed.

Finland investigates Google's clearing of about 300 ha of forest at two data center sites

Google reportedly cleared about 300 ha (740 acres) of forest at Muhos and Kajaani before mandatory environmental impact assessments were complete. Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency has asked both municipalities and project manager Tuike Finland for reports, and appeals have triggered building bans on the sites. Conservation groups want work stopped. Google denies illegal logging. The sites are part of a 13bn euro Finnish investment.
